What I Do: I write stories that engage and help organizations fundraise. I transform data into content that elicits responses. If you are doing something interesting in the world, I want to wax poetic about it and inspire others to open their wallets to make more of it happen. I have worked as a journalist with a focus on human rights, and as a travel writer exploring underrepresented places with complex histories. I am the author of the first edition of Moon El Salvador and am one of Lonely Planet’s go to experts for writing about Guatemala. I also have a background working in communications with the United Nations in Sudan and South Sudan. My favorite kind of work involves getting out into the world and connecting with people so that I can write their stories and share them widely.

Who I Am: I grew up in the unceded Mi’qmaq territory of Nova Scotia, Canada where I spent my summers cold plunging in the Atlantic ocean, eating wild blueberries and daydreaming in a backyard full of monarch butterflies. I also spent a good chunk of my childhood in India, visiting my father’s side of our family. This instilled both a love of travel and a deep sense of global injustice in me. I became a journalist because I wanted to stir people into action with my words. I have always been an advocate for human rights and am committed to decolonial principles. Over the years my exploratory nature has taken me many places but always brings me back to my breath. I am drawn to the mystical and love pranayama, dreamwork, and diving into the subconscious realms. I have been practicing yoga and vipassana meditation for decades. I have always had a strong drive for freedom, and am most happy with a backpack and an open road. My favorite sounds to wake up to are a fog horn, call to prayer or the jungle. I have run several half marathons and drink too much coffee. I feel most at home in Central America, where I spent many years living, working and studying Spanish. I am a poet and friend to all cats.
